As with any rural property there are many tasks that keep us busy. |

WeedingAnother hairy birdsfoot-trefoil (Lotus suaveolens) is relieved of its roots at the 'starfish' stage. This pasture species has turned out to be a major problem especially in burnt areas along the fence line. We hadn't noticed it before the burn. We have tried to eradicate this species from burnt areas not on the fence line. The other major weed that we have attempted to manage this year is the Acacia longifolia subsp. longifolia and Acacia longfolia subsp. sophorae hybrid swarm, potentially a large shrub. Tim Lowe calls this a super weed, and we have now pulled and cut many hundreds of mostly small bushes. Fortunately they do not resprout. We have a major weedy area that will take a concerted effort to regenerate in the coming years, and some pasture grasses scattered along the fences, but otherwise the Sanctuary is fairly free of weeds. We have to keep reminding ourselves its not a garden and we can't eliminate all weeds instantly. P |
Heavy liftingWith his wife 10-days overdue, Travis delivered our tractor in early June. It has been put to work immediately slashing the dispersion zone for our waste water system and inside our boundary fence, plus dragging logs and general carrying. It seems just right for our small property. |
